New Construction Playa del Rey ADU Project: Modern Design with Spanish Coastal Influence
This new construction ADU in Playa del Rey was recently completed and designed to maximize functionality while bringing in a mix of modern and Spanish coastal-inspired design elements. The new two-story structure comes in at just under 1,200 square feet and includes a two-car garage and additional living space on the first floor, with the main ADU living area above.
The homeowners selected all finishes themselves, creating a space that feels personal, comfortable, and cohesive without overcomplicating the design.
Exterior Design
The exterior combines clean modern lines with warmer coastal details. Smooth coat stucco, black windows, black exterior doors, and a matching garage door give the Playa del Rey ADU a modern appearance while still feeling appropriate for the surrounding neighborhood.
Between the main home and ADU, turf creates a clean, low-maintenance outdoor space. The property also includes solar panels and electric vehicle chargers, adding practical modern upgrades to the project.
Kitchen & Living Areas
Inside, the kitchen mixes simple finishes with a few details that add character and warmth. A stainless steel exposed vent hood keeps the space feeling modern, while the patterned backsplash tile brings in some Spanish-inspired influence.
Champagne bronze plumbing fixtures and crown molding above the cabinetry help tie the space together without making it feel overly formal.
Bathroom Details
The bathrooms continue the coastal-inspired color palette with dark navy vanities, marble tile flooring, and different shades of blue tile throughout. The combination adds color and texture while still keeping the overall design clean and straightforward.
Staircase Feature
One of the more detailed features in the home is the staircase railing leading to the second floor. It combines white oak posts and handrails with decorative double-twist metal balusters that add a subtle traditional touch to the otherwise modern interior.
A Functional, Thoughtfully Designed ADU
This project is a good example of how thoughtful finish selections and a clear design direction can create a home that feels inviting and visually cohesive without requiring overly elaborate materials or design elements.
The final result is a comfortable, functional ADU that blends modern architecture with softer Spanish coastal influences, designed to fit both the property and the homeowners’ style.
